Conclusion and The Future

Following the Site Diary Project on site has been an eye-opening experience, providing an in-depth understanding of the construction process, the various stakeholders involved, and the precise processes used in the construction of residential buildings. During site visits, the emphasis on reinforced concrete (RC) frames was especially useful. I was unfamiliar with RC frames and their relevance prior to this course. While the Berkeley project manager stated that it is not a difficult procedure, I developed an appreciation for how it forms the backbone of the building, shaping its exterior structure.
When I compare my experience to the Formative Assessment Plan, I notice a dramatic difference in my perspective. Initially, I was unaware of the regulations that regulate construction sites and the need of following to safety standards, as stated in Building Regulations Part B, particularly in terms of fire safety. A key takeaway has been the realisation of my responsibility for protecting the safety of building occupants. Section 5, which dives into sustainability factors such as carbon embodied, life cycle considerations, and more, has widened my understanding of architecture beyond the material components.

Progress for producing the Site Diary
Unfortunately, due to a change in project management, I had delays in my Gantt chart timeline. The change in management prevented the flow of information and site visits. Despite offers of help, the new manager did not respond to our inquiries, making it difficult to receive on-site information. A fourth site visit was also ruled out due to a lack of communication. As a result, I needed to dedicate additional time to online research to make up for the knowledge gap, which impacted my original timeframe for finishing the site diary.

Observed Materials
Using Virtual Reality (VR) in meetings with stakeholders proved to be a particularly innovative and effective communication tool during the site diary project. Because the usage of virtual reality improves understanding of project visions, it is a tool I would explore using in future projects to promote clearer communication and visualisation. Aside from specific materials, I noticed an obvious and soothing work environment on the building site. The equal treatment of workers in the absence of a hierarchical organisation impressed me. I hope to include this collaborative and respectful environment into the workspaces of future initiatives, or to seek out environments that appreciate such characteristics.
Possible Career Direction
The Site Diary experience has provided surprising insights into my potential architectural career path. While I consider myself primarily an artist with a weak interest in business, the project has generated a renewed interest in the financial side of design. This realisation has encouraged me to pursue a more well-rounded approach to my future profession, combining artistic inventiveness with a better awareness of the commercial sides of architectural projects. Furthermore, the project research has increased my knowledge of the importance of sustainability in construction, reaffirming my dedication to integrate environmental factors into my architectural pursuits.

Sustainability
Berkeley's devotion and initiatives in sustainability and climate change mitigation impressed me. Their yearly sustainability reports, as well as the ambitious long-term goals posted on their website, demonstrate a proactive attitude. Notably, their goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030 is a huge step forward, and their current carbon neutral position is a great milestone. As an added advice, aiming for net zero even before the deadline could demonstrate their commitment to environmental stewardship and set a good example for the industry.

Thank you! Letter
In a collaborative effort, we reached out to thank Xander Taylor, the initial project manager who was essential in guiding us through our site diary project. We wanted to express our gratitude for his amazing support and assistance at this difficult time.
